Racism

racism

“I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.’

Martin Luther King

You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.  There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.  If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Galatians 3:26-29

We are all created and loved by God.  No matter what race or nationality, He created and loves us all equally.  Unfortunately, because of sin, racism and discrimination is a part of our world.

A number of years ago, I wanted to look into changing my place of employment.  I started talking to the front desk person of  a training facility of a nationwide construction job.  The front desk person told me that I would not be able to get in.  I thought they were joking with me, so I kind of laughed and asked “why not”?  “Are you serious”, I asked her.

She began to pull out 4 large ring binders and laid them out on the desk and began to explain what they were.  “These all have names of applicants in them.  This one has names of people who are Hispanic, this one has names of people who are African American, this one Asian’s and this one for people who are White.  “We have to pick 3 out of every other book before we can pick 1 White person”, she explained and told me that is why I would never get in.

In shock of the practice, I began to think through this.  It came to my mind that my Mothers side of the family came from Spain and she had a Spanish maiden name.  The next day, I came in and asked the lady at the front desk, of the training facility, if this would help me at all.  She told me if I could get a copy of my Mother’s birth certificate, it would give me a lot better chance of getting in than if I was considered White.

Another time in my life, I had gone skiing and on the way home we got lost.  We apparently went into a neighborhood that was wrong for our skin color of being White.  It was a very strange feeling as we drove along and everyone, on the street and in cars, were staring us down.  We had a very uneasy feeling going through this area.  We decided to pull into a gas stating to look at a map or ask for directions on how to get back to going in the right direction we needed to get home.

We pulled into the station and stopped at the pumps as another car started coming in at the opposite side.  The 2 guys in the car were staring us down and continued to pull forward and ran into the front of our car while they just sat there looking at us with mean looks on their faces.  We decided to just back up, away from the car that was up against ours, and go find the right direction on our own.

Racism, discrimination and being looked at differently is definitely not a good feeling and is not of God.  Unfortunately, because of sin, racism comes from all races against people of all different colors and nationalities.  In America, our media and certain political persuasions would make you think that all and only White people are racist.  I know that I am not and none of the White people that I know are.  Not that there are not racist White people, as well as Black, Hispanic, Asian, Persian, etc. that are racist.  It is not limited to one race as many times it is portrayed.

It also seems that it is politically correct to be stirring up racism and discrimination against White people.  I believe that this practice would make Martin Luther King cringe.  Stirring up racism against Whites is not going to fix or help anything in our land.

We have got to stop letting the powers of darkness divide us and have us fight against each other.  We are not enemies of each other!  Satan, who has come to steal, kill and destroy wants to destroy us from within by thinking we are each others enemies instead of him.

In terms of systematic racism against blacks and white privilege I have had a few observations in recent times (outside of my own personal experiences).

Although there are 2 times as many White people killed by police than Blacks, our media and certain politicians never report on the white deaths.  They only report on all the deaths of Blacks by police.  Before the facts come out, the media and these politicians stir things up and say it is because Whites are racist and cops are against Blacks which causes violence, hatred and racism.  Almost every time, when the facts come out, we learn that the person shot by police was a criminal with a long rap sheet, armed and posed a real threat to police.  By this time, the damage is done, and they are on to the next story to stir up more problems.

In spite of what we hear from the media and politicians, in all areas of business, religion, politics, entertainment,  sports, etc., we see African Americans in high level positions.  This, including the highest office in our country, which is the most powerful and influential country in our world.  How would they be holding these positions if there is a systematic racism that is being imposed on them?  We can find inspirational stories of all races of people who go against the odds of their circumstances and achieve success.  Each one of us, no matter what our skin color, are usually the ones that hold ourselves back from achievement by making excuses rather than seeking God and doing the work to help us achieve what He created us for.

The only way to overcome and defeat any kind of racism is by the power of God being within us.  It is a heart issue that more race specific legislation, benefits and protections will not help and will only divide us more.  Jesus came to die on a cross to pay for our sins so that we can have a second chance to be in a right relationship with our creator.  This is the only way we can have peace in our land and with each other.  God wants to give us the strength and ability to see people through His eyes and not only through our limited human eyes.

That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.  For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.

Romans 10:9-10
